Where our waste ends, a colony of seagulls begins to thrive. The landfill becomes their home.
A colony of ring-billed gulls lives near Canada’s largest landfill, searching for food for their young. With its meditative gaze, the film follows their daily lives through the nesting season, as the birds shift from subjects of intensive research to targets of falconry-based deterrence. From the gulls’ perspective, the landfill is a place to live; from ours, a problem to be solved. The colony’s story shows how difficult it can be for humans and animals to coexist in a landscape shaped by mass consumption and waste.
