Charcoal Kilns – From the Past to the Present

Charcoal Kilns – From the Past to the Present

  • Czech Republic, 2022, 15 min.
  • Directed by: Zdeněk Zvonek

Charcoal kilns remind us of ancient times and forgotten crafts that we now know only from fairy tales. However, their remains can be found throughout the Czech landscape to this day, and they can tell us stories of history and nature.

Charcoal hearths are experimental locations where an interdisciplinary team of Czech scientists from the Czech University of Life Sciences researches the development of soil and landscape. This team includes teachers, archaeologists, historians and botanists, whose work will be discussed in detail in a debate following the screening. What does a charcoal kiln look like? And what can it tell us about our past?
