The notes, photographs, and film footage of the first French female oceanographer make up a meditative collage focusing on the history of science and the poetics of maritime life in the mid-20th century. The film presents the groundbreaking work of the traveler and photographer Anita Conti, nicknamed the “Lady of the Sea”. In 1952, she spent six months documenting the work and daily life of fishermen on voyages across the Atlantic. The documentary utilizes archival materials to demonstrate the changes in the fishing industry and its relationship to nature and its protection. It blends the historical records with a contemporary view of the ocean and serves as a tribute to scientific fieldwork and a striking ode to the challenges of a fisherman’s life.
