TO SAVE A LANGUAGE
Not only are rare animals disappearing from our world, languages are too. Linguists around the globe are attempting to save them. Indrek Park, an Estonian expert, is heading to the Missouri River valley on such a mission.
Language is a fundamental part of our identity. Being the last speaker of your language can be a daunting prospect. This was the case for Edwin Benson, the last speaker of Mandan, an indigenous language from North Dakota. To ensure the survival of his mother tongue, Benson must entrust his heritage to a stranger, who is his last hope. The movie portrays the difficult work of a field linguist, the role languages play in our lives and communities, and the burden of preserving a heritage.
